In surgical fields, antibiotics are used very frequently, both as prophylaxis for infections at the site of surgical procedures and therapeutically to manage infections and infectious complications. The correct choice of antibiotic is more than just 'giving an antibiotic for a bacterium' according to microbiological findings or for the sake of caution. Currently, there is an overwhelming number of anti-infective agents available, but not all are suitable and indicated for use in surgical fields, whether from a pharmacokinetic perspective or due to high bacterial resistance, which poses a potential risk of treatment failure. The publication provides the reader with basic information about individual groups of antibiotics, their representatives, including the most common mistakes in indications, along with an overview of resistance. Two chapters are dedicated to the issue of laboratory diagnostics, namely microbiological diagnostics, i.e., determining the cause of infection, as well as the diagnosis of inflammation and the possibility of distinguishing between systemic inflammatory responses to infectious and non-infectious stimuli.
