We can look at historical firearms from various perspectives – and it doesn't necessarily have to be just about their influence on history and the way of warfare (although few things have had such a fundamental impact on conducting wars). Firearms served for hunting, sports, and entertainment, and in many ways represent an interesting part of the history of technology. Their perfect craftsmanship and decoration also make them unique artistic objects, which are rightly the pride of all museum collections and the subject of interest for collectors. The gunsmithing craft, which was practiced in many workshops and smaller factories until the beginning of industrial production of firearms, has a long tradition in our territory, and the products of local craftsmen were of world-class quality, including numerous unique pieces.
The updated edition of the lexicon of Czech gunsmiths, resulting from the authors' long-term research in archives, provides biographical information about approximately 2,700 firearms manufacturers from the period 1600–1914, supplemented by a study on the history of gunsmithing in the Czech lands, period documents, and color photographs of weapons of Czech origin.
