Beschreibung
Vascular access refers to the insertion of catheters or cannulas into the venous or arterial system, which enables a range of important diagnostic examinations and is essential for the administration of medications and nutrition in severe illnesses. On the other hand, the insertion of vascular access can be complicated if the access is not properly indicated, inserted, and utilized.
There are significant changes occurring in the field of vascular access. We are encountering new types of vascular access, utilizing new methodologies that significantly reduce the risks of complications, and many new insights have been gradually gained over the last two decades based on a number of studies.
Venous access is traditionally divided into peripheral and central, as well as short-term, medium-term, and long-term. In both peripheral and central access, numerous new findings have emerged in the last decade that fundamentally change our possibilities for their optimal use. The division into short-term, medium-term, and long-term venous access is currently somewhat outdated. In addition to venous access, arterial access is often necessary in intensive care. New algorithms must also be adopted in this area, which will be presented in the book.
