Initially, only families from higher social classes could afford the luxury of staying in a "summer apartment"; it was only after World War I that people from middle or lower classes began to acquire their own recreational properties. This was accompanied by tramping as a way of life in nature and with nature. Our book provides insight into all these worlds. For the charming and readable book by Václav Matoušek, a leading expert on the history of summer rural dwellings, to come into existence, a large amount of historical sources had to be gathered, dozens of kilometers had to be traversed, conversations with eyewitnesses had to be held, archives had to be studied, old maps and plans had to be explored, and finally, from the vast amount of material, the most interesting "model" examples with often poignant fates of recreational buildings and their owners had to be selected. The author chose eleven well-known resorts around Prague, in the valley of the lower Berounka (Zadní Třebáň, Hlásná Třebáň, Lety, Dobřichovice, Všenory), at the confluence of the Vltava and Sázava rivers (Pikovice, Hradištko), on the Mnichovka stream (Božkov near Mnichovice), on the railway line Prague–Olomouc (Klánovice), and in the Elbe lowlands (Hrabalovo Kersko).
