Beschreibung
A very current multidisciplinary topic touches, without exaggeration, all medical fields. In this monograph, leading experts – doctors from various specialties, as well as food scientists and nutritionists – express their views on the microbiome and present recent findings from the last two decades. Humans are composed not only of human cells but also of symbiotic microorganisms that evolve with us and inhabit all epithelial surfaces of the body – skin and mucous membranes. It has been found that microorganisms play a significant role in all physiological (and defensive) mechanisms of our body. A disturbance in the composition and function of the microbiota (dysbiosis) leads to an imbalance between microbes and the host, which can result in the development of various inflammatory, allergic, autoimmune, and neoplastic diseases. New possibilities are now opening up for medicine: to influence the composition and function of the microbiota and its interactions with the host, thereby enabling new approaches to the prevention and therapy of these diseases. Not only lifestyle changes are important, but also dietary habits and direct influence through probiotics, or possibly through the transfer of fecal microbiota.
