Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are among the most common complications in early postoperative care, which, in addition to subjective discomfort, have a range of physiological and metabolic consequences and can significantly prolong recovery and hospitalization of the patient. Despite the availability of highly effective antiemetics, the incidence of PONV is unacceptably high, reaching up to 80% in high-risk patients after surgical procedures.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the issue of PONV, from pathophysiology to current prevention and treatment options, reflecting the latest scientific findings and recommendations. Emphasis is placed primarily on identifying at-risk patients and the possibilities of pharmacological prophylaxis. Special attention is given to the issue of PONV in children, where the situation is complicated by the identification of nausea even in the youngest age group.
