Hematology is a highly specialized area of internal medicine with numerous overlaps into other fields of medicine. In recent years, hematology has undergone rapid development. There has been a particular increase in knowledge about the pathogenesis of diseases, which in many cases has led to radical changes in treatment and a significant improvement in patient prognosis. Although knowledge of cytogenetic changes, mutations, and fusion genes has refined diagnosis and monitoring of treatment response, the establishment of a working diagnosis in hematology still relies on traditional methods: results from blood counts, coagulation tests, or the morphological appearance of bone marrow aspirates. The publication emphasizes these commonly available examinations, thereby facilitating orientation for students and physicians. For individual diseases, their occurrence, subjective complaints, physical findings, and results of basic examinations, including microscopic findings, are described. The publication differs from other monographs by incorporating copies of typical blood count results, coagulation, biochemical, and in some cases, special examinations.
