The book addresses the reciprocal relationship between diabetes and a wide range of endocrine gland disorders. Diabetes mellitus is, of course, also a disease of the endocrine gland; however, in the Czech Republic, it has historically been treated in isolation from other endocrinopathies by a separate specialty. With the change in the certification system (certification in diabetology and endocrinology), and especially with the significant increase in the incidence of diabetes and other endocrinopathies, the need for a comprehensive view of the reciprocal relationship between diabetes and other endocrine gland disorders is growing. A whole range of hormones influences insulin action, and insulin affects the function of many hormonal systems. ***** The individual chapters are organized according to endocrine glands (hypothalamus/pituitary, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, gonads, endocrine system of the GIT, bones). The introduction of each chapter contains a pathophysiological excursion (a simple explanation of the relevant hormonal function/system), and the next part of the chapter is dedicated to the reciprocity of the relationship between diabetes (both basic types, and possibly other types where the issue is relevant) and the corresponding endocrinopathy, with a strong emphasis on the clinical significance of the relationship (e.g., the rationale for diabetes screening in cases of dysfunction…
