The title of the book 'The First Lady of Elegance' refers to two of Hana Benešová's most famous roles. She was a model of a first lady and a model of elegance. Both roles required a long journey. She was born Anna Vlčková on July 16, 1885. Her fateful encounter was with Edvard Beneš. By his side, she experienced both ups and downs. She was the wife of a high school teacher, an emigrant, a foreign minister, and finally a president. Her life reflects the history of a significant part of the 20th century. She prepared for this role for years as the wife of the foreign minister, accompanying her husband and President Masaryk at numerous social events. According to her contemporaries, she was always cultured, representative, and tactful. These qualities were not acquired overnight. A certain humility was inherent to her, but her language skills, communication agility, and distinguished demeanor were honed through numerous contacts, frequent travels, and self-education.
