Armies throughout history have deployed infantry as the main attacking force, but gathering and deploying these units and their equipment can be very time-consuming, even since the introduction of railways and motor vehicles. When German military planners were creating the Panzerwaffe in the 1930s, they realized that the rapid movement of a tank attack required motorized infantry to provide all the necessary support. This infantry component was the integral Schützenbrigade (rifle brigade) for the tank division, originally transported in trucks, but from 1939 equipped with more versatile transporters (Mannschaftstransportwagen, later Schützenpanzerwagen). These semi-tracked armored transporters transformed motorized infantry into mechanized infantry, and during the summer of 1942, the name was also changed from Schützen- to Panzergrenadier (armored infantry). The Czech term pancéřoví granátníci was used during World War II, while the current terminology uses the term tankoví granátníci, which corresponds to motorized/mechanized infantry.
