The book provides a detailed account of infectious diseases of the lower respiratory tract from the trachea to the terminal bronchioles, lung parenchyma, and the pleura and pleural cavity. These conditions are among the most common, not only infectious, diseases affecting humanity. Many of them are characterized by significant morbidity and mortality. Their occurrence is modified by demographic changes, environmental changes, and the development of medicine, for better or worse. An example that shows how these diseases can still surprise and threaten us is the COVID-19 infection. We cannot rule out the possibility of other, unfortunately potentially more serious respiratory infections in the future. The book offers a comprehensive, even 'holistic' view of these infectious diseases, or rather of the person suffering from them. The diagnosis and treatment of these diseases are primarily in the hands of pulmonologists, but as shown by the extensive collective of authors of this publication, multidisciplinary collaboration in patient care is necessary in many cases. Attention is focused not only on traditional diagnostic and treatment concepts but also on rehabilitation, psychological support, and nursing care within a holistic view of the patient.
