In 1988, schoolgirl Janey Macklin disappeared from a poor London neighborhood. Her body was never found, and the case remained unsolved. Now, thirty years later, a creative agency approaches the private detective office of Kate Marshall and Tristan Harper, wanting to process Janey's disappearance into a true crime podcast, and poses an intriguing question to Kate and Tristan: Is it possible that Janey was killed by Peter Conway, known as the Cannibal of Nine Elms? An old, high-profile case would mean an exceptionally lucrative contract for Kate, but it would also bring to light a complicated past that Kate would prefer to forget. Nevertheless, they dive into the search for the fate of young Janey. However, the leads do not take them very far: The last person who saw Janey alive was initially convicted but later acquitted of her murder, Peter Conway is in poor health and rapidly deteriorating, and moreover, Kate and Tristan are increasingly unsettled by the motivations and intentions of their clients and their connections to crime. Can Kate and Tristan uncover what happened to poor Janey, or will she remain forever lost in time?
