Load-bearing structures are an essential part of historical buildings; they must be protected and repaired in a way that does not compromise the monument's value. Our publication is based on this view and aims to assist conservators, historians, designers, builders, and the general public in recognizing and evaluating historical trusses and approaching their preservation, repair, and maintenance appropriately. The publication is designed to meet the needs of technical schools, but we also consider readers without technical education, so we strive to formulate the issues in a way that is understandable to a broader audience. By historical trusses, we mean wooden trusses from the earliest times up to the mid-19th century, when a number of new types of structures designed according to the principles of modern statics emerged.
