In the first part of the book, the authors introduce readers to the anatomical and histopathological characteristics of the peritoneal surface and the basic characteristics of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). This treatment has gradually become the standard for selected tumor entities of the peritoneal surface. And yet, the majority of doctors still define peritoneal involvement as a terminal state of cancer, with no possibility of treatment. This certainly applies to some types, particularly secondary tumors of the peritoneum, but for certain types of tumors, this treatment can significantly influence overall survival or the period without recurrence, and can even completely cure some patients. Separate chapters cover the epidemiology of peritoneal surface tumors, the current perspective on pathological classification, scoring systems for describing the extent of peritoneal carcinomatosis, diagnostic options for peritoneal dissemination, indication considerations, and criteria for performing CRS and HIPEC.
