Every year, approximately eight thousand newborns are born prematurely in the Czech Republic, which is about 7.5 to 8% of all newborns. Meanwhile, the number of premature births is still rising both globally and in the Czech Republic. The causes of this increase are multifactorial, and it does not seem that their proportion in the group of newborns will decrease in the foreseeable future. This specific group of children has special needs in terms of medical care, and as these children 'age', or mature and their needs change during development, other medical and non-medical fields gradually become involved in their care. The editors of the book, MUDr. Daniela Marková and MUDr. Magdalena Chvílová Weberová, have dedicated their entire professional careers to the issue of premature infants.
