The book addresses the pathophysiology of pain, types of pain, and differences in pain perception (men, women, ethnic and geographical differences). It thoroughly discusses the most common types of pain that patients present to primary care physicians (back pain, headaches, abdominal pain). Great attention is given to pain management, where all pharmacotherapy as the main treatment method for pain in primary care is outlined. It is important for primary care physicians to be informed about non-pharmacological types of pain treatment (neuromodulation, acupuncture, psychotherapy). Primary care physicians, especially general practitioners, deal daily with the placebo effect, which is also mentioned and discussed in the book. A significant component of primary care physicians and general practitioners in pain management is rehabilitation, which is dedicated to a separate chapter. In addition to pain itself, we also address suffering, particularly in the chapter on the Spiritual Dimension of Pain.
