Attachment is an innate system of brain function that allows a child to naturally seek the closeness of an attachment figure (most often the mother). A secure attachment enables the child to communicate with loved ones, thereby increasing its chances of survival. If a child does not have the opportunity to establish a close relationship or if this need is disrupted (e.g., by separation or pathological behavior of the parent), it can lead to a range of psychological, behavioral, and psychosomatic problems that manifest throughout life. The author first illuminates the theory of attachment and its disorders. However, the key chapters are those where the author demonstrates, through individual case studies, how to apply attachment theory in the examination and treatment of patients of all ages.
