Good communication means good care. The book presents the fundamentals of communication in patient care, focusing particularly on individuals with dementia. It is important for a person with dementia to feel respected and valued (referred to as validation). The book describes the role of communication in various care models. Here, we find a number of useful tips – for example, regarding the avoidance of questions starting with 'why', speaking in the first person and in positive sentences, using the patient's dialect, speaking slowly and calmly, maintaining eye level, being authentic, and incorporating the patient's non-verbal signals. The goal is to communicate sensitively, ethically, and to prevent misunderstandings and challenging situations. The book, which is accompanied by practical examples, is suitable for professionals dealing with the treatment of individuals with dementia, as well as for anyone caring for them in both professional and personal contexts.
