Approximately 5% of people experience longer or shorter periods of speech fluency problems at some point in their lives. This can manifest as stuttering, cluttering, or symptoms of another type of disrupted communication ability, but it can also be a natural phenomenon – 'normal' disfluency as a characteristic of a child's speech development. Parents and educators are often at a loss when confronted with a child's disfluency; they do not know which of the mentioned categories to place their child in, or they may underestimate the disfluency with the argument that the child will 'grow out of it.'
