Although during the papacy of Pope Francis there is more talk about a greater role for women in the church and women are even taking on leadership roles in some Vatican or other church offices, there are still taboos that remain insurmountable and untouchable for the contemporary Roman Catholic Church: preaching the gospel (the preaching ministry) during liturgy, administering certain sacraments by women in environments where men are naturally absent or not present (hospices, healthcare facilities, nursing homes), ordaining women as deacons or priests, and even the mere presence of women on priestly councils, in episcopal assemblies, in economic offices, etc. Today, women in the Western church are predominantly relegated to the role of listening, obedient, praying, and non-decision-making, modest "handmaidens." However, throughout the long history of the church, women have often held extraordinarily strong positions, which they achieved, so to speak, on their own and through their own abilities.
