Beschreibung
Erich Fromm, whose humanistic books have made psychology and philosophy accessible to readers of several generations, analyzes the nature of Western society here, seeking the origins of its problems and offering an alternative for its development. He describes two fundamental ways of life: While 'having' concerns acquisition and competition, 'being' focuses on inner satisfaction and harmony. Our society values ownership (of property, status, success, pleasures...), yet growing ecological problems force us to change our priorities and refocus on belonging to the world, developing creativity, personal responsibility, and conscience. Fromm convincingly supports his visions of a new world with the teachings of such authorities as Buddha, Jesus, Meister Eckhart, and Albert Schweitzer. The book, first published in 1976, became Fromm's most famous work.
