Beschreibung
After a session with a psychiatrist she had never seen before, eighteen-year-old Susanna is sent to the McLean psychiatric hospital to undergo treatment for depression. She then spends two years in the adolescent girls' ward, recounting the stories of individual girls and her own experiences against the backdrop of the turbulent 1960s. With humor, exaggeration, but also a chillingly critical view of the depersonalized regime of the psychiatric hospital, she reflects on what is normal and what is a sign of madness, what is mental illness, and how one can achieve healing. The book was adapted into a film starring Winona Ryder in the lead role and Angelina Jolie in a supporting role.
