What can be pulled from a hairy blanket? Rags. Can you find a needle in a haystack? Yes, but it will prick you. How does a calf look at new gates? It doesn't, it isn't interested. Why shouldn't you throw a gun into the rye? Because you can't tell it apart from wheat. Where is something that you could throw a stone to? Throw! Adults sometimes speak so strangely. And when you ask them, they say, 'Don't take me literally, IT'S JUST A SAYING.' Then try to make sense of it... But you know what? Maybe with the help of this book, you will actually understand it a bit. The book offers 28 clever stories in which ten-year-old twins try to clarify established sayings (idioms). They understand them literally and thus try to test or experience them. This leads them into tricky situations on which the stories are based; subsequently, the meanings of the idioms are explained. The goal of the publication is not to clarify the origins of the sayings, but to provide an appropriate form of understanding along with enriching the expressive means of the readers. The book is intended for children aged 10-12. It will also appeal to their parents and to Czech language teachers and educators working with children who have a different mother tongue.
