The book Cultural Patterns is one of the most well-known classic works of cultural anthropology. It also serves as a theoretical foundation for understanding cultural relativism. To this end, the author selects three extreme examples of cultures – the Pueblo tribe of the Zuni in New Mexico, the inhabitants of Dobu Island near New Guinea, and the Kwakiutl Indians of western Canada. Through their examples, she attempts to show that each culture has its moral and aesthetic elements, which we can only understand if we view culture as a whole and from its own perspective. Each culture is depicted by the author so masterfully that the book is an engaging read even for complete laypeople. Ruth Benedict (1887–1948) was an American cultural anthropologist and a proponent of cultural relativism. Her accessible and popularizing writing style contributed to her becoming an almost cult author for various student movements in the 1960s. Her book Chrysanthemum and the Sword was also published in Czech in 2013.
