The famous book by the most significant modern Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset summarizes reflections that originally appeared in newspapers starting in 1927. In these writings, Ortega responds to the experience of mass society, which emerged in the 19th century and which he feels particularly acutely in the confused time after World War I. Unlike Le Bon's Psychology of Crowds, he does not naively describe the crowd from a psychological perspective but examines it from the standpoint of the philosophy of history and morality. Ortega's analyses of the crowd individual threatening the very will to coexist with others, his description of the predatory relationship with the state, or the loss of a sense of great historical tasks are entirely timeless and more than thought-provoking in today's context.
