Beschreibung
The Fear of Freedom is one of Erich Fromm's most famous works, written during his exile in the United States, where he had to flee from Hitler's Nazism. Given that people from democratic societies found it unbelievable, despite the facts, that broad layers of the German nation actively supported Nazi ideology and practice, Fromm felt it necessary to explain the psychological roots of this dreadful phenomenon. He aptly points out a fact that no one before him had explicitly analyzed psychologically – the fact of the ambiguity of human freedom, which can open up possibilities as well as lead to anxiety from loneliness and isolation. When freedom is perceived in this latter way, it lures one into the trap of authoritarianism, destructiveness, or conformity. In his work, Fromm investigates when such a fear of freedom arose and what supported it, and despite all his findings, he believes that it is within human capabilities to become oneself through creativity, sensory joy, love, or work.
