There is a vast class of things that science has so far almost entirely overlooked. They are key to understanding physical reality both in everyday life and at the level of phenomena that physics deals with, yet it has traditionally been assumed that they cannot be included in the set of scientific explanations. They are not facts about what is, but about what could be (counterfactuals). According to physicist Chiara Marletto, taking counterfactuals into account could promise a revolution in the way fundamental physical knowledge is formulated and provide suitable tools for addressing new technological challenges – from delivering a new generation of information processing devices to a universal quantum computer to designing artificial intelligence. Each chapter in the book describes how this approach can solve a tricky problem in science and is accompanied by short fictional stories that explain the main idea of the chapter.
