Beschreibung
He is one of the greatest Czechs, the creator of our national music, without whose work we cannot even imagine Czech culture. Yet he wrote his boyhood diaries and love letters in German, and he learned to speak and write Czech correctly only long after his thirties. And that is by no means the only circumstance that may surprise us about the author of The Bartered Bride or My Country. Many books have been published about Bedřich Smetana, and it would seem that his life has already been described in the smallest details. However, the more we learn about him, the more we realize that there is still much to discover. There is certainly not just one universal perspective on our "most national" composer. The docudrama Friedrich, known as Bedřich, depicts his dramatic fate, but also his time and the stories of the people who surrounded him, loved and supported him, or made his journey more difficult. It is also a reflection on why Smetana was so often used for propaganda, perhaps more than any other of our artists. And finally, it raises a few questions about ourselves, to which we still do not have answers.
