In June 1941, Ella lives with her family in the Warsaw ghetto, where a typhus epidemic is peaking. German occupiers are imprisoning thousands of people in overcrowded houses, and dead bodies are piling up in the streets. Soon, news comes that the Germans have invaded the Soviet Union, and it seems that nothing will stop their reign of terror. At that moment, Ella's parents manage, with the help of friends, the couple Zula and Artur Pieńkiewicz, to smuggle their daughter out of the ghetto, and Zula takes the girl into her family. For a while, they manage to avoid detection, but the noose is tightening, and the price for their selflessness and courage is high.
