1946, Berlin. War correspondent Kate Mancini is in Germany, reporting on the aftermath of the devastating war. In the Russian-controlled sector of Berlin, however, Kate breaks all the rules on a cold winter day and saves Mia Stein, an orphaned little girl, whom she finds a new home and promises to stay in touch with. Upon returning to America, Kate faces the harsh reality of the new order. Rick does everything he can to support her, and their friendship deepens into something more. But then tragedy strikes: Rick is falsely labeled a communist sympathizer. He is arrested, placed on a blacklist, and faces imprisonment. Kate must return to Germany and seek out Mia. They once saved the orphaned girl together – now she can save them.
