Berlin 1903. Rahel Hirsch, one of the first trained female doctors, works at the Charité hospital. However, in the otherwise progressive capital of the German Empire, the road to equality between women and men is still long. Young worker Barbara experiences this daily. She works hard in the hospital laundry and repeatedly encounters men who consider women their property. These two women could not be more different, yet they become friends. Rahel asserts herself against resistance at Charité and falls in love with a pioneer of aviation. Barbara joins the women's movement, fighting for the rights of female workers and women's suffrage. But then the First World War breaks out and forever changes the lives of not only Barbara and Rahel…
