Beschreibung
"Pay your ROH stamps regularly and we will allow you to go shopping in the GDR. Shut up, and you can buy a Trabant..." Such rules governed our everyday life in pre-November Czechoslovakia. The repulsive Husák normalization forced us into pretense, feigned loyalty, compromises, and lies just to lead a somewhat normal life. Only a few openly opposed it. Among these brave souls was chartist Lilian Landová, a student from one of Prague's high schools, who was driven to suicide by the StB in 1979. Her story loosely inspired the novel Codename Studentka. The life of the fictional Lída differs in many ways from her real-life counterpart, yet both became victims of the same regime. Both lived in a time we may have naively thought was behind us. However, history has a way of returning, and totalitarian regimes, as today's Putin's Russia shows, are certainly not a thing of the past. The fate of Lilian or Lída should serve as a warning to prevent the return of totalitarianism.
