Frances Wharton comes from an aristocratic family but has no dowry, as her father lost the family fortune. Frances is not interested in the things that concern most marriage-minded debutantes. She is drawn to politics. However, her mother forces her to marry the old but wealthy Sir Reginald, whom Frances finds boring and arrogant. Their engagement is to be announced at a family gathering, which will also be attended by three noble gentlemen who will play a dangerous game to find a bride for their friend. They establish a footmen's club and disguise themselves as servants. The Count of Kendall, disguised as a footman, falls in love with Frances, and the situation seems unsolvable.
