Beschreibung
Set in the second half of the 19th century, this novel tells the stories of leading members of one of the first Czech women’s associations, founded in 1865 at the initiative of the patriot, traveller and generous patron Vojtěch Náprstek. He was inspired by the modern way of life he encountered during his stay in America. The club’s co-founders included Karolina Světlá, Sofie Podlipská and Marie, the daughter of František Palacký. Against the background of this exceptional era, the novel presents the compelling lives of women in Czech cultural circles and portrays their personal dramas. It also explores Náprstek’s remarkable family, especially his devoted mother Anna, who rose from poverty to become one of the wealthiest women of her time and whose home, U Halánků, served as the club’s meeting place. The contents are in Czech.
