Extraordinary memories capture the life journey of Edna Adan Ismail, who was the first Somali girl to receive a scholarship to a nursing school in Great Britain. It was the year 1954, and Edna took a significant step towards her great dream – to establish her own hospital. An exceptional story of an exceptional woman, who, with her resilience and stubbornness, managed to carve the impossible from the ground. In her home country, she battled bureaucratic obstacles, experienced persecution and imprisonment, but never stopped helping people. From 2003 to 2006, she served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somaliland and previously held the position of Minister of Family Health and Social Development in Somaliland. She is the founder and director of the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital, which she opened in Hargeisa in 2002, and a pioneer in the fight against female genital mutilation.
