A direct continuation of the historical novel The Last Hours, which further follows the fate of the progressive-minded Lady Anne of the Develish estate, who, after the death of her husband Richard, takes control of the estate, her rebellious daughter Eleanor, and above all, the young man Thaddeus Thurkell, a former serf who has a chance to rise above his station thanks to his abilities. In the autumn of 1348, the plague from Dorsetshire is slowly receding. Thurkell, who left the estate with five young companions, is trying to secure a livelihood for Develish, but faces numerous dangers as the region grapples with both the aftermath of the plague and marauding bands trying to steal whatever they can from abandoned homes. Meanwhile, Lady Anne must calm the agitated atmosphere surrounding her daughter Eleanor's pregnancy – and she also has to deal with the treacherous and envious estate steward Hugh de Courtesmain, whose goal is to restore everything to the old order established by the heartless Sir Richard.
