In the Czech context, Milan Rastislav Štefánik is viewed almost exclusively in relation to his role in the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918. In reality, however, his life was much richer. In a biographically oriented monograph, Michal Kšiňan attempts to capture all aspects of Štefánik's personality. The first major biography of Štefánik is based on a thorough study of preserved sources, including period press, photographs, and intimate ego-documents. Unlike most politicians of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, M. R. Štefánik received a quality technical education, which he subsequently supplemented with a versatile study of physics and astronomy. Thanks to this, he was able to visit almost all continents before World War I. As a true globetrotter, he gained immense experiences that he applied both during World War I and especially in post-war negotiations for the newly emerging Czechoslovakia. In this context, the author shows how Štefánik's political views differed from those of Masaryk and Beneš. Compared to Beneš, Štefánik was indeed a charismatic man who could charm not only the most significant European politicians but also their wives.
