This Czech-language book introduces the Camino de Santiago, or Way of Saint James, a network of sacred routes stretching across Europe for more than 80,000 kilometres and generally leading to Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of Saint James rest in the city’s impressive cathedral. Pilgrims have travelled there since the Middle Ages, and the Pilgrimage Routes to Santiago de Compostela have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. People now come from around the world in search of adventure, fulfilment, answers or faith. The book presents some of the best-known routes among the more than two hundred officially recognised options, including the popular Camino francés, the long Vía de la plata from Seville, the Camino portugués through Portugal and the wind-battered Camino del norte along Spain’s northern coast. Their landscapes range from mountain peaks, vineyards and legendary forests to sunlit fields and wave-shaped coastlines. Yet the most valuable part of the journey is often the people encountered along the way, from local residents to fellow pilgrims, with shared meals, stories, challenges and celebrations. Santiago is a beautiful destination, but on any Camino, the journey itself is what matters most.
