Beschreibung
This Czech-language book presents the gardens and parks that have shaped Prague’s appearance throughout its thousand-year history, from medieval beginnings through the Baroque period to modern urban development. The opening section offers an overview of how Prague’s gardens and parks were founded and designed within their historical and artistic contexts. The second section introduces individual gardens and parks in groups based on their connection to particular areas of the city, from Prague Castle and Hradčany through Malá Strana, the New Town and Vyšehrad to more recent districts. It focuses mainly on sites belonging to important cultural monuments, while also including royal game reserves and botanical gardens. Representative photographs and historical documentary images accompany explanations of specialist terms, a survey of woody plants, an index of notable figures and location information. For selected historic gardens, the author also explains their distinctive spatial relationships.
