Beschreibung
This Czech-language edition presents Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Proposal for a Constitution for Corsica, a fragmentary work written in 1764–1765 that was never published during his lifetime. Rousseau nevertheless regarded Corsican independence as a matter close to his heart, as shown by the care with which he preserved the manuscript and by the hope he once held of returning to the subject. The first Czech translation is accompanied by an extensive introductory study placing the work in the context of Rousseau’s life and writings, the historical and political development of Europe, and the Corsicans’ struggle for independence. It demonstrates the important place of this text among Rousseau’s political works, as it develops ideas found in other writings, including The Social Contract, in an original way. At the same time, it confirms the consistency of Rousseau’s political thought and highlights the importance he attached to practical politics.
