Clarification brings together five conversations held in the early 1990s by Michel Serres (1930–2019) and Bruno Latour (1947–2022). A generation younger, Latour respectfully questions the older philosopher about the background to his work and life while persistently demanding clarification of his extensive and complex world of ideas. The result is a compelling dialogue that moves from an exploration of the foundations of Serres’s thinking and his relationship to epistemology and contemporary philosophical movements to an incisive view of the modern world, touching on evil and morality while retaining its liveliness and relevance. Michel Serres appears as an unusual figure in French thought, standing apart from its dominant trends and debates. First published in 1992, the work followed Serres’s Natural Contract (1990) and The Informed Third (1991). The former addresses ecological issues in ways that anticipate later ecological thought, while the latter stresses the importance of broad education linking the sciences and humanities. Bruno Latour’s work builds on many of these ideas.
