This book, based on a large number of archival sources, many of them previously unpublished, provides a comprehensive account of the establishment and development of maritime transport in former Czechoslovakia and the operation of the independent Czechoslovak Maritime Navigation company between 1948 and 1989. The subject is examined from many perspectives: alongside an analysis of economic results, the author discusses cooperation with the People’s Republic of China, the events of 1968 aboard maritime vessels, the period of so-called normalization in maritime transport, and the activities of the State Security service in this area. The book also covers the hierarchy aboard ship and the everyday realities of the unusual life of sailors, including travel, emigration, smuggling, and the difficult balance between work and family life in this profession. The engaging text is complemented by period photographs. The contents are in Czech.
