This book examines the largely overlooked subject of business trips abroad during the era of people’s democratic and later socialist Czechoslovakia, presenting the topic both through individual experiences and from the perspective of collective actors such as the state, the Communist Party and other institutions. Alongside the broader political, legal and administrative context of official travel abroad, it includes studies devoted to different groups of employees who travelled abroad or worked there for extended periods. The studies cover foreign travel in transport, foreign trade, culture and sport, as well as journeys undertaken by army representatives and members of the Czechoslovak political elite. They are complemented by edited interviews with men and women who once travelled abroad for work. Period photographs form an integral part of the publication.
