American philosopher Susan Buck-Morss traces the formation of the theory of Theodor Adorno, a key representative of the first generation of the so-called Frankfurt School. She presents Adorno’s exceptionally complex ideas in an accessible way without stripping them of their subtlety or richness, giving particular attention to the development of his thought in dialogue with Walter Benjamin and other contemporaries. The book illuminates key elements of Adorno’s philosophy, including his concept of dialectics, his emphasis on the objectivity of truth, and the creative role of the subject in the process of acquiring knowledge. It reconstructs Adorno’s philosophical method and carefully clarifies the relationship between theory and practice, philosophy and art, and conceptual thought and visual representation.
