This Czech-language nonfiction book examines the Austro-Hungarian navy from 1897 to 1914 as a reflection of ambitions, plans and reality. As a great power, the Habsburg monarchy needed a fleet capable of protecting its citizens and defending the honour of its flag beyond its home waters. Cruisers and other ships representing Austria-Hungary overseas could hardly command respect without the support of a powerful battleship fleet, while the defence of the rugged Dalmatian coast also seemed easier with several divisions of modern battleships. Building such naval power required considerable time, money and effort, however, and success was far from guaranteed. Technological progress, difficult negotiations with governments and the need to protect the empire’s long land borders all affected the plans of its admirals. Some projects remained only on paper, while others ended in merely partial success.
