The connection between the Middle Ages and sub-Saharan Africa may seem unusual, as relatively few publications in Czech introduce readers to the rich cultures and civilisations of the region between the 8th and 15th centuries. This long period remains largely unknown, or even dark, because of the scarcity of sources, yet numerous points of reference survive in the accounts of historical figures and in discovered objects. Historian and archaeologist François-Xavier Fauvelle presents Africa’s “golden ages” through stories and guides whose eyes lead us into the past. They include merchants, adventurers, geographers and diplomats, as well as contemporary archaeologists. Through them, readers discover the settlements of wealthy rulers, densely populated cities where traders from the Islamic and non-Islamic worlds met, and markets where ambergris, enslaved people and gold were exchanged for luxury tableware, metal ingots, salt and cowrie shells brought through trade with distant Asia.
