The Dictionary of Affixes processes prefixes and suffixes, but also presents numerous parts of compound words, which are sometimes considered close to affixes. It is thus a compendium describing all the important derivational elements of words used in contemporary Czech texts – including borrowed words. This unconventional view of word formation from affixes provides a somewhat different picture than the usual direction from derivatives: evidence that is often overlooked for various reasons sometimes comes into focus. An advantage is also the corpus as a data source: the material is sufficiently representative and generally provides a reliable basis for expert conclusions. Using the dictionary, it is possible to study the system of affixes depending on their frequency or productivity. It can be used to address questions of affix synonymy, connections to the nature of the base, and many other phenomena.
