Beschreibung
The Chronicle of the Minerva Gymnasium captures the first nearly half-century (1890–1936) of the existence of a secondary school, whose founding represented a breakthrough in the education system. As the first girls' gymnasium in Central Europe, it aimed to prepare girls for university studies, which, at the time of the school's establishment, was not possible even within the Habsburg monarchy. The chronicle thus maps the path taken by the founder Eliška Krásnohorská, the school's educators, and the students to help advocate for girls' admission to universities and subsequently their equal participation in qualified fields. Given the obligation to record daily routines, the chronicle also captures the discontinuity (but in many ways also the continuity) of secondary education during the reign of Franz Joseph I, during World War I, and after 1918, in the newly formed Czechoslovakia.
