Beschreibung
Volume VI of the series publishing the results of Czech-Bulgarian-British research on the Greek emporium Pistiros in Bulgaria is dedicated to the publication of a treasure of 549 silver and three gold coins, minted by the successors – the Diadochi of Alexander the Great – Philip III, Lysimachus, Cassander, Demetrius Poliorcetes, and Seleucus I. It was buried shortly after Lysimachus's death in the Battle of Corupedium in 281 BC and hidden just before the conquest and destruction of the city by the Celts in 279 BC. It likely belonged to a mercenary serving in Lysimachus's army; a gaming piece (astragal), placed in the vessel along with the coins, suggests that it belonged to a gambler. The treasure is unique in that it was uncovered during a proper archaeological investigation, allowing for an understanding of the circumstances of its hiding, and also because it contains coins that were models for the first Celtic mintings in Bohemia, to which part of the Celtic army returned from the Balkan campaign.
