This monograph examines Slavín as a phenomenon and a crystallizing point of the contemporary national discourse, in which the present turns to the past and, on a symbolic level during the long nineteenth century, the nation and its associated form of social reality are constructed, negotiated, shaped and legitimized. Slavín at Vyšehrad is by no means the first or only national shrine, and Czech national Slavíns have European counterparts and models. Dreams of Slavín and their concrete manifestations reveal the variety and changing forms of ideas about the national community. The book also explores the narrative of the nation’s death and resurrection against the background of several Czech Slavíns; through funerals and national monuments, this narrative also entered the public space of the city. It considers the functional and compositional overlaps between the architectural, performative and literary forms of Slavín.
